Do the quick hit machines have odds set by the house or by the manufacturer (i.e. Wheel of Fortune)? I'm just curious because that's about all I play slot-wise and they recently replaced the red 7's/blue 7's machines with a triple play machine that seems to be more generous with payouts during free spins but seems to be less likely to hit those spins and less generous outside of free spins. I'd like to know if the odds are known for the Quick Hit machines and if so about what your chances are of hitting free spins. It should also be noted that in this particular machine the free spins are not awarded by lining up 3 symbols on the reels but by a mechanism outside of them that appears to trigger randomly like the Mr. Cashman multipliers.

Every slot machine has adjustable hold percentages to accommodate the houses needs.
The sense you are feeling about getting less paybacks during regular play but more on the occasions you get a bonus is called volotility. Some machines have very high hit percentages during play, even if they are not all wins higher than your bet amount and some have lower hit percentages during play but pay better in bonus rounds.

Most machines use a different set of virtual reels during bonus rounds that are a lot more liberal than the base game. In Nevada it is a requirement to show on the video screen when a different set of reels is being used. Somewhere on the screen you will see a message that says something similar to 'Bonus Reels In Play' during bonus rounds or free spins.

Every slot machine has one of a certain number of allowable boards in it. IF a casino has to pay marketing fees
to some Outer Space Star, its likely it can't afford to make the chips too generous.
